During our February Cultural Immersion Tour to Croatia, we hired Klapa Pinguentum to
perform for our group when we were in Buzet, Istra. Little did we know when we made this choice,
that we would be in for a thrill beyond words. As part of our travels and our studies in Croatia,
Pam and I have had the privilege to hear/see many wonderful klapa groups, and klapa music is
now one of our favorite types of Croatian music. That said, when we heard this klapa sing,
we literally believed that we had died and gone to heaven. Because klapa music has its origins
in littoral church music, this characteristic comes through most decidedly in Klapa Pinguentum's
style of klapa. It is so pure, so clear, and such a perfect blend of voices, that the listener feels
somehow transported to another sphere of existence.
And musically speaking, Klapa Pinguentumis among the best klapa groups we've heard.
Their intonation, their musical phrasing and arrangements, their dynamics are superb,
practiced, and stylistically perfect.
Most importantly, this groups represents the klapa style in the purest form.
So, when you feel ready to reflect, meditate, and listen to some unbelievable klapa singing,
pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back, close your eyes and experience this very excellent
klapa group, KLAPA PINGUENTUM!
"PINGUENTUM" is the old name for the town of Buzet (in Istra) where this group is from.
They have won many awards for their singing!
The word klapa translates as "a group of friends" and traces its roots to littoral church singing.
The motifs in general celebrate love, wine (grapes), country (homeland) and sea.
Klapa singing has been inscribed by UNESCO on their 2012 List of Intangible World Heritages.
