Product Description

THIS BEAUTIFUL, HANDPAINTED ORNAMENT is coming directly to us from ZAGREB, CROATIA, from the artist herself!

Some of the Croatian Christmas Traditions Represented on this Spectacular Ornament Are:

*Licitarska Srca, gingerbread hearts from Croatia were baked for many occasions. They were brightly decorated with sugar frosting and a small mirror was placed in the center. A message was usually attached which read, “Look into this mirror and you will see the person I love.” Today, they are used as Christmas tree ornaments.

*The decorated Christmas tree was adopted around the middle of the 19th century. On Christmas Eve the children would decorate the tree with decorated with apples, nuts, colored ribbons, and lace crocheted into snowflake patterns and Licitarka Srca, gingerbread hearts with mirror in the middle.

*On St. Lucy’s Day (December 13th), wheat grains are planted in round dish and left to germinate. By Christmas Eve, the sprouted tender green shoots grow high enough to tie with a red, white, and blue ribbon, the Croatian trobojnica or tricolor. It was thought that the higher the wheat grew, the better the crops would grow. And the light from the candle was meant to symbolize the light that Jesus brought to this world.

*Božična Crvena Jabuka - The Red Christmas Apple:  In an era when courting was often done under the watchful eyes of the parents, the moments on the way to Christmas Mass presented an opportunity for young people to engage in innocent flirtation. A young girl would carry a polished red apple in her pocket or behind her back and walk slowly past the young boys on the way to church, hiding the apple. The "apple of her eye" would approach her, tease her, and try to take the apple from her.  She returned the flirtation and, while pretending to withhold the apple from him, finally "allowed" him to find the apple. In most instances the red apple became a sign of their love. In more recent times, apples became representative of the Christmas season, and were used as decorations.

*Straw that Croatian families scatter under the kitchen table where the youngest child in the family will get to sleep on Christmas Eve. The straw symbolizes the circumstances under which Jesus was born...

(The Prigorje HAT and the Prigorje Woman also add to the "Croatian-ness" of this very special holiday tradition!)
