Product Description

We are very fortunate to know a jeweler in the town of Korcula, on the island of Korcula, who creates beautiful FILIGREE jewelry. This year, we were able to purchase many unique, one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry from him. We hope you will enjoy our selection!

Filigree is a delicate kind of jewelry metalwork, usually of silver, made with twisted threads that have been soldered together on to the surface of an object of the same metal and arranged in artistic motifs. It often suggests lace and/or fretted scrollwork, and remains popular in traditional, antique Croatian jewelry stores. Most of the Croatian filigree jewelry found in Croatia today is either an antique or made by 3rd generation family jewelers who still use the older tools. Though filigree has become a special branch of jewelry in modern times, it was historically part of the ordinary, daily work of the jeweler.

There are very few jewelers left in Croatia who do this very tedious and intense work by hand and much of what is sold as “filigree” nowadays is jewelry that has been machine made. We are passing along theses great prices to you, our customers, in the hopes that you will want to own a little piece of Croatian history in order to help keep our beautiful traditions alive!

This stunning Croatian PENDANT is over 2.0 inches long, and it showcases absolutely beautiful & detailed workmanship linked together! The pendant with the chain hang about 13+ inches long. Featured on the chain are 2 lovely freshwater pearls! This piece is an antique.

HISTORY and TRADITION behind the "HAMSA" (hand design): This "hand" jewelry has been traditionally believed to provide a line of defense against the "evil eye." It serves the same purpose as the Croatian tradition of hanging a mirror over (or behind) a married couple. The mirror, or in this case the amulet, is used for protection. For example, if a person were to be subjected to a malicious stare from a person, then the mirror would reflect the evil wishes directly back to the person with evil intent!

The "HAMSA" has a long tradition in Jewish, Islamic and in Christian beliefs and customs. It was believed that the wearer would experience many blessings, an abundance of power, and sometimes it was even thought that it brought fertility to the wearer. It symbolizes, in Christian culture, the hand of God.

 GENUINE. EXQUISITE. TRADITIONAL.
