Product Description

In Croatia, there is a very long tradition of coloring eggs, decorating them with many signs and symbols considered to be good luck. Artist SANDRA uses the traditional Croatian method of decorating her hand-blown eggs called "BATIK." Her stunning work uses authentic designs representative of many regions of Croatia. Each egg comes in a clear, lucite box, along with a special little card that provides information about Easter Egg painting in Croatia.

...and from Fran Babic, ethnologist

To say the eggs are "painted"  falls far short of the intense work it takes to make these eggs. The eggs are "written": they are called "pisanice" a word which derives from the word "pisati." The tool used is a "pisaljica " or "pisalka" and the "ink" is hot beeswax.  Starting from the lightest color to the last ground color, the designs are written with beeswax then dipped in the lightest color, written again with beeswax and dipped into the next color and so on until the design is completed.

The work involved absolutely justifies the price of the eggs.  In fact the prices here are less than half of what PISANICE typically retail for!

The motifs used on this PISANICA are symbols for the following:

 Endless Line

  • Symbolizes eternity/eternal life
  • Used also as a symbol of protection. Since evil forces cannot find the beginning or the end, they cannot enter the “road” of your life…

Stars

  • Originally the symbol of the pagan sun god, Atar
  • A Life-Force symbol

 Saw Tooth or Wave

Symbolism is protection, aka “wolf’s teeth” or “snake,” both of which are considered protectors in early Slavic folklore...

Dots

  •  *Christian symbolism: Mary’s tears as she pleaded for her Son’s life before Pilate
  •  *Sometimes scattered over a field to suggest stars

Little Baskets, Triangles: Triangle symbolism, the sacred number “3”

  • The 3 elements of nature: fire, water, air
  • The 3 stages of life: childhood, youth, old age
  • The Holy Trinity (Christian era)
