This is a beautiful anthology of Bosnian LOVE SONGS, commonly called "Sevdalinke." They are passionate, melancholy and influenced by the reign of the Turkish Empire. Since the Homeland War in Croatia, there has been a renewed interested in this type of song which has its roots in Bosnia and Hercegovina.
SEVDALINKA or, SEVDAH: type of folk music originating in Bosnia and Hercegovina.
- National music of the Bosniaks, but popular all across former Yugoslavia
- Roots reach back to Ottoman Empire, after arrival of Turks in medieval Balkans.
- Comes from Arabic word, "sawdah" meaning ecstasy, desire, love---which at one point was used to describe black bile, a substance purported to control human feelings and emotions.
- Combination of Oriental (Turkish), European and Sephardic (descendents of Jews who were expelled from Spain and Portugal in 1492) elements
- Love songs, typically
- First, these were women's songs; now, men sing them also.
